Your Questions About Windows Xp Laptops Pc World

Mark asks…

Reinstalling Windows that came with the laptop?

Hi
,

I have an Amilo L6825. I purchased it from PC World in the UK in 2004. It came with Windows XP Home edition and it has the verification sticker on the back. Last year the hard disk failed and i had to get a new one installed. When i got it back they had reinstalled windows but it was the professional edition. I didnt think much about it at the time but now i have encountered a few problems in that SP2 will not install etc. etc. and i am worried that there might be problems if i try and upgrade to vista for example.

Does this sound like a problem?

If so is it possible for me to get a copy of Windows Home to reinstall??

Thanks in advance!

D
Thanks Biggles – if i do this will i loose all my files and other programmes etc.???

steve answers:

Quite often PissyWorld laptops and desktops dont come with recovery media, it is up to the customer to run a recovery Disk creator tool, if you were lucky then maybe you did recieve some disks, as your Operating System was installed by Pissyworld they should be able to give you the correct media if you ask them nice.
Other than that you may have to pay to buy a valid licence for XP Pro to get the updates or buy another copy of XP Home. I dont think the recovery media from another OEM will work even with your activation Key. Good luck with this one I am not sure what you should do for the best……… Maybe download linux and use that.

Richard asks…

new laptop user, can I get some advice?

going from a desktop to a laptop is a bit of a change. I have a bit of a problem though. with my PC I was able to do a large download and still browse the net. The browsing would only be a little slower, but still, I was able to do it. With my laptop, its more single minded, doing mainly the download and hardly letting me browse. Also, games seem to have more difficulty running on the better spec’d system even on lower settings. Is this just a laptop thing? Here are the specs, everything about the laptop is better with the exception of possibly the Processor (by a small amount) and possibly the graphics card.

PC (bout 4 years old) Pentium Dual Core 2.4 ghz, 2x1gb DDR2, Nvidia geforce 8500, directly connected to modem via ethernet, Windows XP.

Laptop is AMD Athelon II P340 Dual Core 2.2 ghz, 4gb DDR3, ATI radeon HD 4250, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Windows 7.

Hardcore XP users, please avoid ranting about how XP still may be the better OS. Windows 7 is working just fine for me, ill need to fine tune it a bit to my liking but its worlds above Vista.
btw, my WI-FI signal is just fine, its almost just as strong as being plugged into the modem.

steve answers:

Your bottleneck is WiFi. With the direct connection to the modem, you more than likely had 100MBs Ethernet speeds. With WiFi you are lucky to have a third of that – maybe 30MBs.

Lizzie asks…

How do I take screen shots when I’m using the computer, and where to the images save themselves?

I know there’s the “PrtSc” button, and I tried pressing it but nothing seems to happen. When I play games such as World of Warcraft a message comes up saying that the image has been saved, but I cannot find it in my pc files.

If it makes any difference I use Windows XP Home Ed. on a Toshiba laptop.

steve answers:

When hitting PrtSc your screen shot is saved to the clipboard. Simply go in to MS Paint, Photoshop, or whatever image handler you use and hit “Ctrl + V” to paste it.

Helen asks…

Laptops you recomend?

Im looking for a laptop for around 500 or less pound,
i do not want to buy one over the internet,
it has to have atleast a 120GB hard drive, and be reasonably decent with 1mb ram.

Any recomendations? Stores which sell them in my area are pc world, currys, argos, M&S etc.

It should come with atleast a 2 year guarantee and run on windows XP or vista.

Cheers 10 points for best answer

steve answers:

HP Pavalion tx2000 is the best.

Hey, Ryder, Its me again. Lol

There are plenty good games that will run great on your computer.

*Unreal Tournament 2004 – Great shooter, very fast action.

*Elder Scroll III: Morrow wind – Fun single player RPG, lots of quests to do and the world of Morrow wind is huge.

*Splinter cell 1 & 2 – Best spy action games i have ever played.

*Sid Meier’s Pirates – Very fun adventure game as you live the life of a pirate.

*The Sims 2 – Fun simulation game.

*Fable: the lost chapter – Good RPG/Adventure, very similar to Morrow Wind.

*KartRider – A free game that you can download from kart.nexon.net Its like Mario Kart. Very fun, im currently playing alot of Kartrider. My buddy name is KOBE81 , Add me if you are ever going to play

*Far Cry – Very fun, intense and scary shooter. Good graphics also.

You can also enjoy games such as Counter-Strike 1, Warcraft III, StarCraft, Guild Wars(not 100% sure about this game).

BTW, Gears of Wars wont run on your laptop as i have already told you earlier in your previous question. Lol
