Your Questions About Shoulder Strap Support

Laura asks…

I’m going on vacation and I need beach clothes and especially a swimsuit. Can you help me? Please?

I’m a teenage girl; 5’8”, 180 lbs and dropping, dark blond hair, green eyes. First, the swimsuit: I’m really modest and would never consider or be able to pull off a monokini or bikini, and I don’t want a one-piece. My favorite idea so far has been to get a plain, preferably dark-colored tankini and wear brightly colored/patterned board shorts over it (this may sound odd but i know a few of my friends wear this and it’s really cute, plus I don’t like showing off my legs). I want a halter or maybe a tube top because I have good shoulders, but I really don’t want anything with shoulder straps. I’m large-ish on top, so I need something with support, but nothing with underwire, ick. I also need some cute shorts that aren’t too athletic and don’t stick to my butt or my thighs. Again, I don’t like showing off my legs, so bermuda shorts would be good, or a little bit shorter. Nothing too preppy (a&f, hollister) or athletic. Favorite stores are Delia’s and Urban Outfitters. Any ideas? Thanks!

steve answers:

Venus.com has lots of cute suits and they have free returns! Better than going to to store! Lands End has suits that you can buy and mix and match the tankini tops and bottoms. Boden has super cute cover ups! I have one and have gotten lots of compliments. Lots of bright summer colors. Good Luck!

Jenny asks…

anyone here have to wear a back-neck brace combo (CTLSO)?

It is basically 2 molded halves of hard, foam lined plastic that start at my hips and come up over my breasts (cups are built in) in front and up to the shoulder blades in the back. The two halves connect at the sides with 3 Velcro straps on each side and 2 shoulder straps. Mounted to the top of the brace is the cervical attachment, I forget what they call it but it is basically a metal neck brace with bars that come up and support a pad/head piece at the back of my head and a bar in the front that holds the chin piece/cup. 2 straps firmly connect the head piece to the chin piece. follow this link to see it: http://www.optecusa.com/index.asp?page_id=108 That’s basically it, not really a lot of fun to wear (especially out in public and during the hot summer!)
I guess I am just looking for others to share their experience’s with and commiserate with.
Thanks
Nancy

8 month old using convertible car seat? HELP?

My 8 month old daughter (a little over 20 lbs) no longer fits in her infant carrier. We now have to move on to the convertible car seat, one that allows for rear facing. We bought the Graco-my ride 65 and my husband is having a very hard time with it. The manual states the harness must be at the lowest slot to be able to use the support insert that comes with the car seat. The harness slot 1 seems to low for our baby, the shoulder straps are too low and it doesn’t seem safe. She needs to be using the harness slot 2 or 3 and you can’t use the infant pad then. I would think an 8 month old still needs that support insert.

Can anyone offer suggestions on a safe convertible car seat for an 8 month old??

And would it be safe to use the car seat minus the support pad? I would just call Graco but today is a holiday they are not there.

Thanks!

steve answers:

Infant support pad are never necessary. They are strictly for comfort when a newborn has a difficult time holding their head up. It is the straps that keep the child safely contained in an accident. If the manual only allows for the pad to be used in the lowest position then it has only been tested to be safe *to* use the pad in that one position… It would be safe to leave the pad off in any position.

Joseph asks…

I plan on being a mechanical toy for halloween; how should I build the mechanism? How will it stay? thanks!?

I want to have that key-like bit standing straight up from me back, like Imogen Heap in Goodnight and Go ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9athUdhH40 ). I want to do this without cutting into my dress so the whole thing has to be held in place with shoulder straps or belts or other outer supports. I don’t want some tin foil piece of crap- I want an actual wind up-looking thing (it doesn’t have to move). Any suggestions? thanks!

steve answers:

The only way I can think of is to get a small flat box the kind jewelry comes in and cut out a keyhole shape in it. Spray paint this with metallic paint in gold/silver
You could then use one of those large old fashion type keys. (you or your family might have one or you may be able to find one at a thrift store/ironmongers)
If you haven’t got one you could make the key out of strong card/metallic foil, with a straight piece after the key part.
Cut two idential shapes, glue them together leaving the straight part unglued. Paint as keyhole part.
When dry thread the straight piece through keyhole, divide and stick the two parts on the underside of the keyhole box.
The hole thing could then be put on the dress by velcro (stick one piece on the back of the keyhole box and stitch or use double sided tape to stick it to your dress.
Or
Make support and stick it to that.
Another way is to find an old lock plate and key and use that.

A good 36 DD bra from Fredricks of Hollywood?

Ok y’all I need your help. I have wasted hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars on Victoria Secret bras b/c of my size (with the exception of Body by Victoria- they fit on the first wear. Then shoulder straps would fall) With all the rest, my boobs would fall out when bending, jumping, or walking.

I wear a 36DD in Victoria secret , it seems like only Body by Victoria provides support. Even though they come in different colors I would like a bras that is a little more lady like and sexy with support. Did I say I am tired of Body by Victoria?

I must also say that I made a promise to myself that I would only buy bras that have panties to match….. Any suggestions?

How is Fredricks of Hollywood? What are they good for?

Any other suggestions? Please help!

steve answers:

Before I got pregnant I was a 38F and I wore Fredricks of Hollywood bras religiously…I wore the Full Figure Smooth Sensation bras (http://www.fredericks.com/product/bras/shop+by+bra+style/full+figure/full-figure+smooth+sensation+bra.do). Now I am even larger (I didn’t shrink like most women do after having kids, I just got bigger and stayed bigger.

I don’t know if you are also full figured but Lane Bryant sells bras in 36DD and they fit fabulously!!! You can find them in stores or online at http://lanebryant.charmingshoppes.com/pagebuilder/cacique_thumbnails?cgid1=79&PAGEID=1604&cgid2=&cgid3=&cgid4=&CGROUP.SHOPSIZE=36DD

Good Luck!
