Your Questions About Best Laptops 2010

Charles asks…

What is the best FREE antivirus?

My Norton Antivirus 2010 just expired. Honestly, I didn’t like Norton, because it slowed down my laptop. It was a waste of money. So I want to know what is the BEST FREE ANTIVIRUS available in the internet. I have my eyes on AVG, Avast, and Avira. I also want to know if it will slow down my laptop.

The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn’t remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It’s strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It’s tough to say which is best.

Best way to save all my files?

I want to restore my laptop to the factory settings and if I do that I once again would have the free trial of Norotn and Word 2010. What is the cheapest and easiest way to save my files cause I want to keep some pictures, movies, songs etc. I’ve thought about an external hard drive but that’s a little pricey and a bunch of flash drives would probably equal that amount so what should I do?

You are either going to have the spend the money on some sort of external drive or a bunch of DVDs. You could use online storage

Google Docs – http://docs.google.com – 1Gb of free space – 1Mb to 20Mb individual file size limit depending on type
Dropbox – http://dropbox.com – 2Gb of free space – 300Mb individual file size limit
SkyDrive – http://skydrive.com – 25Gb of free space – 50Mb individual file size limit
Adrive – http://adrive.com – 50Gb of free space – 2Gb individual file size limit
Megaupload – http://www.megaupload.com – 200Gb of space – 1Gb individual file size limit
Mediafire – http://www.mediafire.com – unlimited free space? – 200Mb individual file size limit

Depending on your internet speed using one of these services could take quite a while.

Steven asks…

What’s the best laptop under 14″ and $1000?

I’m looking for a good laptop for a sibling. While we both really like the 13″ macbook air, but dropping over $1300 on a computer with no CD drive (and hence no way to use our MS Office 2010 disk) is just out of the question. What I’m looking for is a good, all round computer that must be under 14″ and preferably under 5 lb, and with good enough specs and build quality to make up for the lack of an Apple logo.

While it hasn’t come out yet, the 14″ Samsung series 7 caught my eye. It has an SSD (my favorite feature of the Macbook Air) with a huge 750gb 7200RPM hard drive, AMD graphics, a 2nd gen intel processor, and a backlit keyboard, all at 4.3 lb in a slick case. That about sums up what I’m looking for in a laptop: good graphics, an SSD or some form of flash cache, a decent processor (a 2nd gen i3 or i5 is ideal, i7s are a horrible waste of money), a backlit keyboard, good looks, and if possible, discrete graphics from AMD or Nvidia.

The problem is that the Samsung Series 7 might cost north of $999. The cheaper alternative would be any AMD fusion based laptop: anything with an A6 or A8 processor will be very good. The problem is that I can’t find anything smaller than 15″ with an A6 or an A8 processor.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything from Sony, Asus or anything else really nice out there that we should look at? Has anyone found an AMD A6 or A8 in a 14″ or under laptop?

The main purpose of a laptop computer is portability. Each computer offers different dimensions, so it is vital that you look at the device before you buy it to ensure it is not too large
